Dracula Is a Drama Queen
So I was reading Bram Stoker's B-Dracula...
Honestly, of all stories that deserve an unnecessary, gender flipped remix, B-Dracula should be top of that list. Normally I’m not the biggest fan of genderflipping classic characters (unless we're talking about Doc Ock in Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse. I'm more worried about when it can feel patronising and/or lacking in nuance because someone couldn't be bothered to create an awesome original female character). That said, I'm a hypocrite and would totally read/watch Ms Helsing and her ragtag band of professional women engage in a battle of wits against the aged Countess Dracula and her three immortal toy boys for the fate of her overly dramatic fiancé’s soul. It would be hilarious.
I believe there is a Van Helsing tv show staring a female version of the character but from little I know that is where any similarities to the novel end. That, again, feels more like the kind of genderbending for the sake of it. Badass female vampire hunter does not need to be related to Van Helsing. Buffy the Vampire Slayer? But I digress. Let me get back to contradicting myself.
Random thoughts:
- Quincey Morris deserved more. Big brash American cowgirl kicking vampire booty in England would be a recipe for a good time.
- I can't help but think of a pink, Legally Blonde/fluffy 2000s aesthetics which is out of keeping with the historical setting but still.
- Definitely need some killer diary/journal entries. "Dear Diary, today I staked the resurrected vampire corpse of my best friend's fiancé before he could eat a toddler..."
- Maybe this is want Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was going for?
